Whole industries revolve around the Internet or base some operations on it, after all. In this section, let us talk about some types of websites that many modern businesses consider important and helpful to their operations.

Search engines – these are the sites where people to go to in search of information about certain topics. People also use them to search for those who sell certain products or offer services. Today’s most popular search engines are Google and Yahoo. There are also engines that are designed specifically for e-commerce, like BizRate, Froogle, MSN Shopping and Kelkoo. The common practise for companies these days is to optimise their websites. This means making sure that when a user searches for a certain item, the website will come out among the top results. This process is called “search engine optimisation” and includes processes like copy writing using key phrases and building link partnerships with relevant sites.

Review site - many businesses have become aware of the importance of review sites. This is where customers and critics alike sound their opinions on the company’s products and/or services. For example, a restaurant that is listed in a review site can be discussed by pleased or dissatisfied customers and by food experts. Potential customers can use these reviews to decide whether or not they will dine at that restaurant. Review sites are similar to rating sites, which have specific criteria and are used by experts and critics.

Community site – these are social media networks that bring people from all walks of life together. Some examples are Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. In these sites, people usually communicate through message boards, chats and private messages. The sites can be dedicated to a certain niche – like music or dating, for example – or be directed toward a broad audience. Business try to make their presence felt in community sites because these are able to bring them close to their desired market.
